Surface Modification of High Siliceous Quartzite Aggregates in Asphalt Mixtures - A Field Study

Abstract: Quartzite aggregates are weak in adhesion with asphalt binder due to high silica in the mineral composition, leading to various distresses in the pavements. Modification of aggregate surface is one of the ways to improve the adhesion properties of quartzite aggregates. This study used two different chemical treatment methods (i.e., Hydrated Lime and Silane coupling Agent) to quartzite aggregates, and field sections were made using chemically treated aggregates. The sections were constructed on the Jammu Ring Road Project service roads located in Jammu, J&K, India. A total of 6 sections were constructed, which includes three sections each of Hot and warm mix asphalt. Wet Bond-S was used as warm mix additives in WMA sections to reduce the production and compaction temperatures. Field performance evaluation was carried out in a three-month cycle. Three cycles of evaluation were carried out: one after summer, one after the monsoon, and one after winter seasons. Structural evaluation was carried out using a Benkelman beam deflectometer, and functional evaluation was carried out using MERLIN and PCI surveys. The study showed that both chemical treatment methods perform well in the field. When comparing HMA and WMA sections, chemically treated aggregates perform better in WMA with reduced production and compaction temperatures. The study found that the chemical treatment of quartzite aggregates is a promising solution to improve the longevity and durability of pavement in regions where quartzite aggregates are predominant.
