Lama Abufares is a current Ph.D. candidate in the Al-Qadi research group at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Abufares’ research interests include ground-penetrating radar applications to asphalt pavements, asphalt materials, pavement performance, signal processing, optimization, and machine learning techniques. Currently, Abufares is working on monitoring the quality of asphalt pavements using ground-penetrating radar during construction. Abufares won several awards including the Illinois Pavement Association (IAPA) scholarship (2021), the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) Graduate Research award (2022), the Marshall Thompson Student Research Award (2023), and the Grainger College of Engineering Diversity Ambassador (2024-2025). Abufares worked on several projects funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). Abufares aspires to become a Professor and a researcher in the near future.
