Prof James Maina is a full-time Professor and Deputy Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology (EBIT) at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He is a registered professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and a fellow member of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) and the South African Academy of Engineering (SAAE). Additionally, he is a member of the Academy of Sciences of South Africa (ASSAf). Prof. Maina is a developer of a suite of software packages for highway and airport pavement design and analysis. His research output includes over 150 technical reports and scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. He serves, amongst others, as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Road Engineering (JRE), indexed with Scopus, a Board Member of the Southern African Transport Conference, and a member of the Steering Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)’s International Conference on Transportation & Development 2025, Task Force member on Verification and Validation (V&V) of Pavement Models. Prof. Maina played a crucial role in Qatar’s Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) program for road transport and infrastructure network leading up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup Finals, serving as a technical director and leading pavement expert supporting Qatar’s Public Works Authority (PWA).
