Erol Tutumluer is the Abell Bliss Professor in Engineering at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He has a comprehensive educational background with a B.S. from Bogazici University, M.S. degrees from Duke University and Georgia Tech, and a Ph.D. from Georgia Tech in Civil Engineering. His roles at UIUC include teaching a range of courses in transportation and geotechnical engineering and overseeing the department's International and ZJUI Education Programs.
Dr. Tutumluer's research focuses on Transportation Geotechnics, particularly the characterization of pavement and railroad track geomaterials, soil stabilization, and sustainable construction practices. This work has resulted in over 350 peer-reviewed publications and the mentoring of numerous graduate students. In addition to his academic contributions, Dr. Tutumluer is involved in editorial and leadership roles within professional societies such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Transportation Research Board (TRB), and the International Geosynthetics Society. His work has been recognized with awards from TRB and international accolades such as the Yangtze River Scholar Award and the Qiushi Distinguished Professor title from Zhejiang University. Dr. Tutumluer is the 2020 recipient of the ASCE T&DI James Laurie Prize and the 2021 recipient of the ASCE Geo-Institute’s Carl L. Monismith Lecture Award. In 2024, Dr. Tutumluer was awarded the Francis C. Turner Award by ASCE for his contributions to the field of transportation and geotechnical engineering, underscoring the impact of his research and leadership in advancing the discipline.
