Dr. Gulen Ozkula is an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of the District of Columbia. With expertise in structural and seismic engineering, her research focuses on seismic design and resilience of steel structures, community resilience, and machine learning applications in failure prediction. She earned her Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from UC San Diego, where she studied wide-flange steel columns, and holds degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Celal Bayar University, and an Executive MBA from Istanbul University.
Dr. Ozkula has held faculty and research roles globally, including at the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, and Tekirdag Namik Kemal University, and conducted postdoctoral research at UC San Diego and Tokyo Institute of Technology. Her published work appears in high-impact journals, and she has presented at numerous international conferences. A dedicated educator, Dr. Ozkula integrates innovative teaching methods like Virtual Reality and simulation-based learning to inspire students and address climate-related challenges.
Committed to diversity, she mentors students from underrepresented groups and advocates for equity in engineering through her involvement in organizations like the Society of Women Engineers.
