Zhanping You, PhD (he/him/his)

Dr. Zhanping You earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2003. He is a Distinguished Professor at Michigan Technological University, where he has also served as Director of the Center of Excellence for Transportation Materials, a partnership with the Michigan Department of Transportation. He was honored as the Donald and Rose Ann Tomasini Assistant Professor of Transportation Engineering and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2009, Professor in 2014, and Distinguished Professor in 2019.

Dr. You is a leading researcher in pavement and materials science, with over 400 publications in top-tier journals such as the Journal of the Transportation Research Board, ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, ASCE Journal of Engineering Mechanics, Road Materials and Pavement Design, and Construction and Building Materials. His research has been widely recognized in academic and industry circles.

A dedicated educator, Dr. You specializes in transportation materials, pavement design, and asphalt materials. He received the ASCE Excellence in Engineering Education (ExCEEd) Fellowship in 2009 and attended the Teaching Workshop at West Point. He was named Outstanding Advisor in 2018 and received the Michigan Tech Research Award in 2019.

Actively engaged in the professional community, Dr. You has been an associate editor for the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering since 2008 and the Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering (Elsevier) since 2017. He serves on the Board of Directors for multiple journals and has held leadership roles in ASCE, TRB, AAPT, ISAP, AAAS, and RILEM. He has reviewed papers for over 35 journals and edited four ASCE special publications.

Dr. You is a Fellow of ASCE and EMI and was awarded the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Faculty Fellowship in 2004 and 2005.
