Yuxi Shen is a PhD student in Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at the University of Arizona, under the supervision of Dr. Alyssa Ryan, with a strong focus on transportation research, particularly in traffic safety and sustainable transportation modes. During her master's program at Southeast University in China, Yuxi dedicated herself to various industry-focused projects, covering urban transportation/logistics analysis, multi-modal platform construction, and scenario analysis. This passion continued through her master’s studies in Finland at Aalto University, where she gained interdisciplinary research experience, combining engineering with data science methods to explore complex transportation challenges.
Yuxi’s current research interests have broadened to human-centric urban studies, a passion she developed while studying at Aalto University. Her ongoing project explores the relationship between environmental factors, demographic characteristics, and walking behavior in urban settings. By investigating how access to walkable areas and perceptions of neighborhood safety influence daily travel and long-term health outcomes, Yuxi aims to provide actionable insights for urban planners and policymakers.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Alyssa Ryan, Yuxi’s work also incorporates socio-demographic analysis and safety perceptions related to transportation behavior. Her interdisciplinary research combines transportation engineering, geographic data science, and public health, with the goal of promoting safer, more accessible, and sustainable urban environments.
