Jemal Jibril Muhammed (PhD)
Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering | Practicing Professional Engineer (PPECM)
Jimma University, Ethiopia
I am a dedicated civil engineer with over 17 years of progressive experience across academia, consultancy, and professional practice. My academic journey includes earning a PhD in Civil Engineering from Jimma University (JU) and Texas Tech University (TTU), an MSc in Civil Engineering from Addis Ababa University (AAU), and a BSc in Civil Engineering from Jimma University. These qualifications, coupled with extensive field experience, have equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of infrastructure development, design methodologies, and engineering research.
At Jimma University, I serve as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, where I play a dual role in both academia and administration as the Manager of the Design and Consultancy Service Office. In addition to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses, I serve as a guest lecturer at leading institutions, including Arba Minch University, Dire Dawa University, Semera University, and Bulehora University. I also mentor and advise MSc and PhD students not only at Jimma University but at other national universities, fostering a new generation of professionals and researchers.
My research profile reflects a strong focus on applied engineering, with recognized contributions in pavement design, transportation geotechnics, and sustainable construction materials. As an R2 researcher, I actively engage in multi-disciplinary research projects that bridge theory and practical implementation. One of my key leadership roles is heading the ASSURE SI Project – Sustainable Construction for Ethiopia – a collaborative initiative between Jimma University and Hasselt University in Belgium. The project emphasizes capacity-building through education, research, and the dissemination of sustainable construction practices, with a long-term goal of advancing Ethiopia’s infrastructure and environmental resilience.
Beyond my academic commitments, I maintain strong ties with the industry. I have led numerous building and road design consultancy projects, contributing to infrastructure development throughout Ethiopia. My expertise extends to managing occupational safety and health (OSH) baseline surveys, an essential initiative to enhance workplace safety standards across the construction sector. I have overseen high-impact projects such as the development of national infrastructure design standards for the Ministry of Education and the preparation of legal frameworks and Standard Bidding Documents (SBD) for Design-Build (DB) projects.
With a unique blend of academic expertise and industry experience, I am committed to advancing sustainable infrastructure development and creating practical solutions to engineering challenges. My work fosters collaboration between academia, industry, and government, driving innovation while cultivating leadership and organizational skills within the infrastructure development sector.
