Dr. Udit Jain is an Assistant Professor at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur, India, which is an Institute of National Importance under the aegis of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Govt. of India. He did his PhD in Transportation Engineering from IIT Roorkee on Pedestrian Safety and formulated guidelines for the selection of pedestrian crossing facilities at mid-block crosswalks. The work carried out by him on pedestrian crosswalks has been incorporated in the Indian Highway Capacity Manual, Indo-HCM (2017) and the pedestrian crosswalk warrant criteria have been incorporated in IRC-103 (2022), Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities. He completed his Masters from School of Planning and Architecture New Delhi in 2013. He was the Gold Medallist and received the Best Student Award in Transport Planning 2013 batch.
He is a certified Road Safety Auditor and has completed certification courses in Road Safety from Delft, Netherlands and IIT Roorkee. He has carried out several road safety audit works in the states of Punjab and Maharashtra. He has organized several 15-Days Road Safety Auditor Certification Courses at VNIT Nagpur in association with the Indian Roads Congress and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (Govt. of India) for the training of working professionals in the field of road safety.
He is an active contributor to peer-reviewed journals and various national and international conferences. He is a member of different professional bodies like Indian Roads Congress (IRC), Institution of Engineers India (IEI) and Institute of Town Planners (ITPI). He has guided several undergraduate and postgraduate students for their project work and also guided doctoral students in the domain of traffic engineering and road safety. His research interests include Road Safety, Pedestrian Facility Planning, Intersection Design, Integration of Transportation modes and Intelligent Transportation Systems.
