University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN)
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Mohamed Mostafa is a Civil Engineer by qualification and holds a PhD from the University of Liverpool, UK (2009) in Pavement Engineering and an MSc (2003) in Transportation Engineering. Professor Mostafa is the current academic leader (head) of the ACL Cluster (Agriculture Engineering & Civil Engineering and Land Surveying) at the School of Engineering, University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is also the Chair and Director for KZNDoT Chair in Sustainable Transportation.
Professor Mostafa is an experienced academic with a demonstrated history in research and academia. He has multinational experience, having started his academic career in Egypt before moving to the UK and relocating to South Africa. His primary expertise lies in pavement research, including, but not limited to, asphalt, pavement materials, smart transportation, and geotechnical pavement applications with a main focus on “sustainable roads”. He is interested in applications related to environmental aspects and characterisation of flexible pavements, particularly bituminous materials. Environmental aspects of research include incorporating non-conventional materials, e.g. recycled or waste, in pavement. Furthermore, he considers pavement modelling, pavement life cycle assessment, pavement management systems, pavement sensing, and smart transportation research areas. Mohamed is recognised as a researcher category A by SANRAL, and he has multiple professional engagements, including ECSA PrEng, SARF, SAT (Vice president eastern region), and SAICE.
He has published more than 85 articles in journals and conference proceedings. His scholarly activities include serving as an editorial member and reviewer for multiple publishers, e.g. International Journal for Traffic and Transport Engineering, Materials, Sustainability, Journal of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Journal of Sustainable Research in Engineering, Sustainable Civil Infrastructures, International Journal of Pavement Engineering, and International Journal of Pavement Engineering Research and Technology. Mohamed has graduated 23 PG students to date while supervising many PG students. He is also the founder and chair of the Sustainable Transportation Research group (STRg) at UKZN.
