Dr. Boris Claros is a Research Scientist I in the TOPS lab with ample experience in naturalistic transportation safety modeling and analysis. Dr. Claros recently completed a FHWA project looking at data from the SHRP2 NDS naturalistic study to evaluate safety at rural horizontal curves based on vehicle trajectories and lane position. He has also worked on bicycle instrumentations for naturalistic data collection. Dr. Claros instrumented bicycles with video cameras, ultrasonic sensors, LIDAR sensors, GPS, accelerometers, and heart rate monitor. His work has contributed to evaluate vehicle and bicycle interactions by measuring lateral passing distances and vehicle speeds and evaluating the impact of operational and roadway features on bicycle safety. He is currently collecting bicycle naturalistic data to evaluate the impact of centerline and shoulder rumble strips on high-speed rural two-lane roads in different states including Michigan and Wisconsin.
