Professor Mostafa is an experienced academic and Pr Eng with a demonstrated history (more than 25 years) of working in academia and industry. He has multinational experience, starting his career in Egypt before moving to UK and then to South Africa. Currently, he is the Head of Civil Engineering at University of KwaZulu-Natal. He also co-chair the Sustainable Transportation Research group (STRg) at UKZN.
Mohamed is skilled in Pavement, Highways, Transportation, and Geotechnical Engineering. He is also experienced in Research Management. His research focuses on “sustainable roads”. His background and interests centre primarily on the experimental and analytical investigation of fundamental materials behaviour of asphalt and granular materials for pavements. Main research projects include the use of recycled, waste, by-product, Nanomaterials, and secondary materials in the transportation infrastructure, together with adopting environmentally driven research in pavement construction, management and maintenance. Other research includes the implementation of IT in developing countries transportation systems. He has published more than 80 articles in journals and at conferences.
He is a registered Engineer in Egypt and in South Africa as a professional engineer. He has been involved in design and construction of multiple construction projects. Mohamed also mentored a few academics to their ECSA registration.
