A Simplified Method for Measuring Asphalt Binder Adhesion

Abstract: This work is designed to manufacture a device for the qualitative measurement of the attraction force or the adhesion value between asphalt binder and aggregate particles under the influence of shock. Since, the adhesion value varies among different aggregate and asphalt sources and grades, as well as with additives. The device consists of a three-point base support with a 50 cm height column that holds a metallic ball of 5 cm in diameter. The ball is freely thrown on the overturned sample with the plate to cause a vibration. The poorly bonded aggregate would fall. This gives an indication of the adhesion value.
The device is characterized by its light weight, easy to manufacture and provides the necessary raw materials with low cost. The possibility of using the device to measure the amount of adhesion quantity or the forces that cause peeling in the asphalt mixture of the surface layer of paving in an early manner to avoid this phenomenon in advance and before the implementation process. The aggregate with a gradation of 4.75 mm (remaining on sieve No. 4 classified as coarse aggregate) has good resistance to segregation compared to the size of the coarser aggregate of 11.5 mm, even when increased quantity of asphalt binder used.
