Abstract: This study investigates the multifaceted effects of expanding Kumasi Airport to International status. The primary aim is to understand the socio-economic benefits, environmental consequences, and community sentiments regarding the expansion. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research collected quantitative data from 350 residents through structured questionnaires and qualitative insights from key informant interviews. The findings reveal significant optimism about the economic prospects of the expansion, with 57.4% of respondents agreeing and 38.6% strongly agreeing that the development will benefit the local economy. Employment opportunities were a major highlight, with 59.1% believing the airport would likely offer new job opportunities, further supported by a substantial interest (46.3% interested, 37.4% very interested) in employment at the new airport. However, concerns about potential negative impacts were also evident. A significant portion of the community expressed worry about an increased cost of living (82.5%) and potential displacement due to rising demand for accommodation near the airport. Environmental concerns were notable high, with 75.7% expressing worry about the expansion’s impact on the local ecosystem. In terms of infrastructure, the expansion is perceived positively, with 92.8% of respondents believing it will improve the state of roads around the airport. Additionally, there is a strong perception that the airport will enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic activities across various sectors, including hospitality, trading, and tourism. The study concludes that while there are clear economic and infrastructural benefits to the airport expansion, careful planning and community engagement are crucial to mitigating potential negative impacts. The results highlight the need for sustainable development practices and proactive measures to address environmental concerns and social disruptions. This research provides a comprehensive baseline for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders to understand the broader implications of large infrastructure projects and emphasizes the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability and community welfare. Future studies are recommended to focus on longitudinal assessments, detailed environmental impact analysis, and strategies for inclusive community participation in development projects.
