Abstract: Transportation infrastructure is a cornerstone of economic development in Pakistan, with extensive investments made in roads, highways, and urban transportation systems in recent years. These efforts are aimed at improving connectivity, facilitating trade, and boosting regional development. Pavement quality, as a critical element of road infrastructure, directly impacts transportation efficiency and safety. In Pakistan, challenges such as inadequate maintenance, outdated construction standards, and environmental stressors like extreme weather and flooding often lead to premature pavement deterioration. However, recent initiatives focused on modernizing pavement design, adopting sustainable construction materials, and integrating international standards have helped improve road durability and performance.
Beyond the economic implications, transportation infrastructure also has significant public health impacts. Poor road conditions contribute to traffic accidents and increased vehicle emissions, which can exacerbate respiratory illnesses in densely populated areas. Moreover, inadequate transportation networks in rural regions limit access to healthcare facilities, compounding public health challenges. To address these issues, there is a growing emphasis on developing resilient infrastructure that supports both economic growth and public well-being. Sustainable transportation planning, which considers factors such as reduced emissions and improved safety, is essential for enhancing public health outcomes alongside the development of more durable and efficient pavement systems. This integrated approach is crucial for Pakistan’s long-term progress.
