Abstract: Developing and managing sustainable and resilient transportation infrastructure is critical to recover quickly and efficiently from costly extreme weather events and other disruptions. While threats and hazards are increasing, strategies for enhancing sustainability and resilience in the transportation industry are evolving quickly. Many municipalities and transportation developers are turning to the Envision rating system as a way to introduce design alternatives, engage with stakeholders and the community, and assess climate vulnerability and operational risk. In this presentation, the panel will illustrate how Envision can be used to support sustainable transportation planning, design, construction, and operations. The presentation will be illustrated by case studies of projects which have leveraged Envision to identify and implement innovative sustainable and resilient features during the design phase including microgrid technology, advanced stormwater controls, enhanced security measures, and public art. The presentation will also uncover strategies for contractor sustainability engagement and lessons learned from Envision projects in construction. Finally, the presentation will include a discussion of Envision as a tool for master planning and integration with NEPA assessments to support advanced sustainability and resilience integration across projects. Preliminarily identified aviation and roadway design and planning projects for inclusion as case studies are managed by the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, Indianapolis Aviation Authority, Salt Lake City Department of Airports, and the City and County of Denver. Additional presenters from these organizations may be added based upon selection to the conference.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees can expect to learn the following from this session:
Describe the elements of Envision and how it is applied to projects.
Define ways to increase sustainability during project design and construction phases.
Describe how Envision can be used for master planning and integration with NEPA to inform alternative analysis.
