Review and Evaluation of Concrete Pavement Design Method in Alabama

Abstract: Concrete pavement is a durable, viable, and cost-effective material that has been widely used and adopted in the United States. However, current design methods may not be fully updated, especially considering the increasing frequency of natural hazards associated with rapid climate change. This research aims to improve concrete pavement design in Alabama by making it more resilient, efficient, and cost-effective. Currently, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) relies on an older design method (AASHTO 1993 Design Guide), which often leads to unnecessarily thicker concrete pavements. This study also explores whether using wider concrete slabs without tied shoulders can reduce pavement thickness and offer a more cost-effective alternative to conventional slabs with tied shoulders.

The primary objective of this study is to review current concrete design methods, compare the performance of conventional slabs with wider slabs, and assess whether ALDOT should adopt the 1998 AASHTO Supplement Design Method. The methodology includes a detailed literature review, an online survey of pavement design practices, interviews, a cost-effectiveness analysis, and a final evaluation of design methods. The expected outcome is a set of recommendations for improving concrete pavement designs in Alabama, along with critical updates to ALDOT specifications. This will help ensure that Alabama roads remain durable and viable while reducing construction and maintenance costs.
