Slope Stability Analysis and Risk Assessment for Transportation Infrastructure

Abstract: Slope instability poses a significant threat to transportation infrastructure, particularly in regions prone to natural hazards like earthquakes, heavy rainfall, and erosion. Landslides and slope failures can lead to road closures, traffic disruptions, and economic losses. To mitigate these risks and improve the resilience of transportation networks, it is crucial to identify and assess potential slope instability.

This research aims to develop a comprehensive methodology for identifying and assessing slope instability risks along highways using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and advanced simulation techniques. By integrating high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs), geological maps, hydrological data, and historical landslide inventories into a GIS environment, potential slope failure zones can be delineated. Subsequently, numerical simulations, such as limit equilibrium analysis and finite element modeling, will be employed to quantify the stability of these slopes under various loading and environmental conditions.

The proposed methodology will enable the prioritization of high-risk sections of highways for targeted mitigation measures. These measures may include slope stabilization techniques like retaining walls, rock bolts, and soil nailing, as well as early warning systems to alert authorities and the public of potential slope failures. By implementing these measures, it is possible to reduce the risk of slope failures, minimize disruptions to transportation, and protect human life and property.

This research contributes to enhancing the resilience of transportation infrastructure and mitigating the socio-economic impacts of slope failures. By providing a robust and efficient framework for slope stability analysis and risk assessment, this research can help transportation agencies and engineers make informed decisions regarding infrastructure planning, design, and maintenance.
